That water buffalo is definitely following us
The first week in a new location is perhaps the most
exhilarating. It’s exciting and fun with new surroundings and stunning views.
On the other hand, it can be intimidating, as everyday events feel strange and
foreign from squat toilets to riding buses. Just walking down the street, crazy
observations can bombard the senses.
-‘Is that buffalo following us, or chasing us?’
-‘Wow. That
man just loudly hocked a giant loogie onto the street.’
-‘Ouch,
that guy [accidentally] threw a chunk of cement onto my foot.’
-‘That baby
we passed said something to me, what did he say? And why is a three year old wearing
eyeliner?
-‘My
stomach is gurgling with every step, should I be brushing my teeth with the tap
water?’
And that’s the beauty of traveling with GVI. You have
support staff that takes the pressure off of airport arrivals. We have a team
to walk alongside you to marvel at the cows and loogie spitting skills of
locals (very impressive and very common). We will hopefully protect you and get
you accustomed to the various and constant construction projects on the main
street in lakeside and we will teach you the bus and bartering system so that
you feel confident enough to explore independently on weekends.
The buffalo blinked first, staring contests make an everyday walk extraordinary. |
We are your introduction to a host family who will be
available around the clock to explain local customs like eyeliner on children
and who will also offer you two local meals each day. And when you do get sick
or are just suffering from a travelers belly we will be by your side with our
first aid kits and we will go with you to a doctor who’s accustomed to
foreigners at any time.
With GVI Nepal, you might be half a world away from home but
you won’t be alone. A volunteer’s orientation week is full of activities and
new experiences. The next few blogs will be walking you through the orientation
schedule.
