Tikka for everyone
Volunteers often notice locals walking around with a red dot between their eyes. The small ornamental dots are called bindi's and are traditionally worn by followers of hindu because they believe it retains energy and strengthens concentration. It is also said to protect against demons, bad luck. For some it represents the third eye.
Sometimes locals opt to use a red powder tikka to create the red dot on their forehead. Tikka may be used on a daily basis or just on special occasions depending on customs. In Nepal, tikka is given freely and volunteers usually aren't here long before they find themselves sporting their own tikka.
In the photos that follow, you'll notice that even animals are adorned with tikka and that the red powder can also be used as a way to distinguish winners - in which case it's not limited to forehead use.
